Building Strengths Within Project
Building the Strengths Within (BSW) seeks to improve support for young people from black and ethnic minority (BME) groups and communities who self-harm or are at risk of self-harm, including asylum seekers and refugees. Its objectives are to increase understanding and awareness of the issues, to clarify requirements for information and supports, to improve practice, to give voice to young women and men from black and ethnic minority communities, and to increase confidence among service providers in dealing with self-harm among such young people. This work is funded by the Camelot Foundation.
SDC Role
In partnership with organisations like Glasgow Anti-Racist Alliance, Glasgow Association of Mental Health, Health in Mind, NHS Lothian Minority Ethnic Mental Health Project, the National Resource Centre for Ethnic Minority Health, Penumbra, and Saheliya, SDC has established a network of groups and individuals working in this area.
A focus on people and partnerships
In the first phase of the project the Learning Together event brought together representatives of 22 organisations to discuss the key issues. A larger seminar took place in September 2006, with the purpose of looking at training tools, working partnerships, and building commitment to involving young people.
Improving communications and building knowledge
A database of those working in this area has been created as a foundation for increased inter-agency communications on this important topic. Local seminars are being implemented to share information and good practice examples.
