Joanne McLean

Role:   

Senior Researcher

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, develop and manage the SDC’s Research and Evaluation portfolio, research staff and associates
  • Promote standards of research undertaken by SDC and conformance with professional guidelines and best practice for social research
  • Promote the utilisation and transfer of research findings, evidence and knowledge to improve mental health and well being policy and practice
  • Contribute to the overall management and strategic direction of SDC

Areas of Expertise/Interest:

  • Track record in local and national research and programme evaluation across a broad range of mental health related topics including:
    • suicide and self harm prevention practice and policy
    • research utilisation in mental health policy systems
    • mental health improvement
    • improving acute and primary care mental health services
    • recovery and peer support
    • mentally healthy workplaces
    • mental health law
  • Was principle investigator on:
    • Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour: Establishing the Territory for a Series of Research Reviews,
    • the National Evaluation of the First Phase of Choose Life and the National Evaluation of Doing Well by People with Depression.
  • Currently leading a number of projects, for example,
    • the Scottish Executive funded Risk And Protective Factors For Suicide And Sucidal Behaviour: A Literature Review,
    • evaluation of the suicide prevention training SafeTALK in Scotland,
    • evaluation of the pioneering Craigmillar Peer Support Project sponsored by the Scottish Recovery Network and the Scottish Executive,
    • Supporting the Development of Counselling Services in Lothian
    • evaluations of Penumbra’s Edinburgh Self Harm Project and Young People’s Support Project in Fife.

Background:

  • Joined SDC in 2000 having previously worked in three NHS Boards as a research fellow and clinical governance facilitator in primary care and mental health
  • Sociology, BA Hons, University of Strathclyde
  • Psychology, Post Graduate Diploma (Conversion Degree), The Open University
  • Advanced Medical Statistics, Modules of Masters in Public Health, University of Glasgow
  • Currently undertaking a PhD (part-time) Research Utilisation in Scottish Mental Health Policy, University of Edinburgh
