about sdc

SDC is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a wide portfolio of skills and experience in policy, research and practice relating to mental health. SDC is at the cutting edge of thinking on mental health and wellbeing and both leads and facilitates the promotion of mental health and wellbeing in Scotland and beyond.

What do we do?

SDC believes that everyone’s mental health is important and that good mental health is everyone’s business. As a Non Government Organisation with close links to academic departments and public policy development, SDC is able to use its unique position to integrate innovation with practical support for implementation.

We work from first concepts to evidence based conclusions with a wide range of partners and clients in all areas of policy, strategic development and service improvement. We also use our experience to develop and deliver our own research and development activities. At every stage, we combine novel approaches and rigorous methodology with experience and support for practice on the ground.

 A bigger picture

We work all over Scotland and increasingly farther afield.

Our clients and partners include voluntary organisations, businesses,
health boards, local authorities, national and international bodies and networks, as well as local groups and organisations.

 Knowledge and Experience

From single events to long term partnerships and networks, SDC offers a tailored service. We can help you explore issues and challenges and develop practical solutions to meet your needs. We have a strong team of core staff, a diverse pool of associates, extensive networks across Scotland and ever-increasing international links – all of which add to our knowledge and understanding of mental health.

 Working with direct experience

We have an excellent record in canvassing the views of people with experience of mental health problems. This means we can help their voices to be heard clearly and promote participation in decision-making. Firm believers in recovery, our working practices ensure people are supported to take part and that doing so is a positive experience. We have a strong track record of directly involving people, and where the approach indicates, we support people with lived experience to conduct research and develop skills through working on SDC projects. SDC respects transferable skills acquired through experience of mental ill health, and as a workplace, we encourage people with lived experience to apply for employment.
